Eau de Henri is a collage homage to Henri de Toulouse Lautrec. When I crossed paths with a posterbook of his works, it prompted me to work at a larger scale than usual. The limited palette of Henri’s prints prompted me to utilize unfamiliar color combinations.
At first, I taped the posters to the wall in my apartment and observed. Helping to overcome a creative block, the prints gave me permission to experiment. As the poster collages evolved, my imagination sparked other possibilities. Eau de Henri is a culmination of these new ideas, each including Lautrec.
Some images in the collection are busy with lots of layers. Others are more sparse and let the eye wander instead of dart. I embrace both and appreciate them for allowing me to see in shapes and think in color.
Eau de Henri is on view at Washington Street Gallery on Saturdays from 12:00-4:00 p.m. or by appointment.
